Doom 3 -Xbox- 8.5

April 13, 2021

After 17 years, I finally got around to playing through Doom 3! I remember back in 2004, the hype for this game was insane. The original Doom from 1993 was the most influential FPS ever, but there had been many advancements in the genre since then. By 2004, we had seen Goldeneye, Half life, Perfect Dark, and Halo. And Half life 2 and Halo 2 were coming out later that year. Doom 3 was set to take back its throne as the king of first person shooters! However...when it finally came out, many were disappointed by it due to the gameplay not advancing the genre very much. Well, I have finally played it for myself on the Xbox version. I liked it a lot. Yes, the combat and AI is no where near the levels of Half Life or Halo. And yes, it’s more survival horror than action FPS. But if you appreciate it as predecessor to games like Dead Space, it’s actually really awesome. And those graphics and lighting are incredible, even 17 years later. The Xbox version has worse graphics than the PC version, but it still looks great. Just make sure you play on a CRTtv, at night time. This game uses a lot of black, and it’s hard to see on an LCDtv. Anyway, I give the game an 8.5, at least. The atmosphere pulls you in for a thrilling ride. It’s not the masterpiece that Half Life was, and it’s not as good as Halo and Goldeneye, but few games are. This was still a polished game with a lot of effort and artistry behind it.
