I just beat Folklore for ps3! The story unfolds like a really good mystery novel, mixed with a fantasy fairytale world that the characters transport to and from the real world…sort of like Alice in wonderland, Pan’s labyrinth, or Coralline. Gameplay consists of folks/creatures you collect and use to battle other monsters. The little bit of motion controls take some getting used to, but the system gets really fun once you get the hang of it. The plot of Folklore was truly excellent. I just wish there had been more cutscenes with voice acting. For a 2007 ps3 game, the sheer amount of cutscenes without voice acting felt a bit dated and must have been rushed in production. You get used to the comic book style reading after a while, but when there is voice acting, it’s a breath of fresh air that you wished for more of. Fortunately, most of the voice acted cutscenes are towards the end of the game, so the developers did save the best stuff for last. The game also has a dream-like atmosphere, lush environments, and a haunting soundtrack. This game is definitely a hidden gem for ps3 that spins a great yarn. As I was playing the beginning/middle of the game, I was thinking it was maybe an eight out of ten, because the plot and gameplay were great, but a lot of impact from the cutscenes was lost from the comic book style presentation. But in the last third of the game, there was a much better mix of voice-acted cutscenes, cg cutscenes, and comicbook cutscenes, and the plot revelations were so great, that I would have to swing my final score to a 9. If the whole game had much more voice acted cutscenes throughout, I would have rated it even higher. The plot and characters really were that special. If you play this, stick with it until the end. One of the ps3’s best games.
