I just played through and beat Beyond Good and Evil. This game came out in 2003, and I’ve been curious to play it for a long time…and boy, was I disappointed! I know this game got rave reviews when it came out and it has a cult following…but I thought it was pretty boring. The story follows this human girl and her uncle (who’s a pig) on a distant planet, which is being invaded by an alien race. There is some conspiracy going on with the aliens and the government of the planet, or something. The story and characters never grabbed me at all. I can see why this game did not sell very well, despite the good reviews from critics. It’s weird, but not interesting. Thankfully, it was short. And there is a decent variety to the gameplay, but no particular element is very good. The racing segments are alright, the stealth is okay, and the combat is whatever. It’s also sometimes easy to get lost. And I didn’t care about photographing the random creatures. The boring plot is what really had me not caring what I was going to do next, and made progressing through the missions feel like a chore most of the time. There is good level of polish over everything (smooth animation, frequent checkpoints), so that was a plus. But I just didn’t find the world of Hillys very interesting. I am rating Beyond Good and Evil a 4.5 out of ten. This game is very overrated, and I don’t understand the praise from other people.
