I just finished Ori and the Blind Forest for Nintendo Switch. This is another indie metroidvania, but it’s a nice one that takes place in a forest, and you play as a cat-like creature. The nature setting here is beautiful and relaxing, as is the soundtrack. The save system took some getting used to, in that you drop save points where you want to instead of relying on designated save stations. The combat is nothing special, but the platforming is where it’s at. The jumping and controls are very fluid, and allow great freedom in overcoming the challenging parkour segments. I played this on easy mode, which allows for more checkpoints during chase sequences, and those came in handy. Some parts could be pretty hard. This game came out in 2015, and I can see how Hollowknight took the genre much further two years later. But this is still a very solid modern day indie title. I’m giving Ori and the Blind Forest an 8 out of ten. I look forward to seeing what they did with the sequel that came out five years later.
